Fights in Local Counties

Richmond County:  Joint meeting of dog hunting club leaders in Richmond County on Friday, September 16, 2011 at 7:00 pm at Prospect Hunting Club.

Orange County Commissioners may attempt to circumvent state law.  Dog hunting is allowed in northern Orange County.  Some new residents seem determined to destroy our hunting rights and long held traditions.  A few women appeared before the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Public Hearing in Graham, NC on September 5, 2011.  They complained that hunting with dogs should be banned from Orange County, generally complaining about the cruelty of hunting, and specifically hunting with dogs.  Another fight is brewing for September 20, 2011.  Contact Henri McClees for more information.

Duplin County:  On September 6, 2011, Duplin County Commissioners appointed dog hunters to a local committee to draft a reasonable animal ordinance which respects the rights and traditions of dog hunting.  This committee was formed in response to a proposed first draft which included a countywide leash law, with insufficient exemptions for hunting dogs.

Orange County Caldwell Hunt Club meeting Tuesday, July 19, 2011.

Local Laws
passed for several counties during the 2011 legislative session, which adjourned 6/18/2011.  Visit Legislative News for more information.

Martin County  On March 31, 2011, we had a packed auditorium at the Public Meeting held by Martin County Commissioners to listen to citizens about the issue of hunting with dogs.  The meeting was held in the Auditorium at Riverside High School, Williamston.

Northampton County  On March 15, 2011, we had an excellent turnout for the Public Meeting held by Northampton County Commissioners to listen to citizens about the issue of hunting with dogs.  The Commissioners were patient and attentive.  We presented a Petition with 1404 citizen signatures and 68 farmers' signatures to demonstrate support for hunting deer with dogs in Northampton County.

Get to know your County Commissioners!

Register to vote and prepare for the 2012 elections.
If you are not registered to vote, take time to register to vote.  For more information, call us or visit the NC State Board of Elections.  Be ready to vote for PRO DOG & PRO HUNTING candidates for the NC Senate, NC House of Representative, some of your County Commissioners, judges, and other local elected officials to be elected in 2012.  Joe & Henri McClees are ready to help you with a Voter Registration Drive in your county.  Call us for more information.

Richmond County  In 2010, Richmond County Commissioners voted to hurt hunting with dogs.  The single friend of hunters is Commissioner Ben T. Moss, Jr., newly elected Republican Commissioner.

Thank you Vance County Commissioners!  On June 23, 2010, Vance County Commissioners wrote their legislative delegation to declare their opposition to the Commercial Dog Breeders bill (SB#460) presently pending in the NC House.

Acquaint yourself with your County's Commissioners.  Meet each of them.  Have friendly conversations to get to know them.  Do they hunt?  Are they supportive of our right to hunt and the right to hunt with dogs?  Now is the time to learn who deserves your support in the November 2010 elections.

Rockingham County's Planning Board tabled its proposed Kennel Ordinance because of the huge opposition expressed at its January 2010 meeting.  Their February 15, 2010 meeting has been cancelled, and they have announced they will rework the proposal.

If you are willing to serve on a hunters' advisory board in Pasquotank County, contact Bobby Harris.  For more information, call Bobby Harris, President of Albemarle Houndsmen Association in northeastern NC (home 252-336-2626, cell 252-340-2626).

Let us know what is happening in your county.  If you learn of efforts by animal rights activists to work in your county in North Carolina, please contact us immediately.  The NC Sporting Dog Association can help you defend your county against ordinances to harass dog owners and hunters.
